Bill Merilees
---- Newcastle Island that lies in the Nanaimo harbour has a rich and diverse history, that started with the First Nations peoples who made it their home, because of the rich marine life. This way of life started changing after the arrival of the Europeans in the late 1700's. First with the arrival of the Hudson's Bay Company, then the discovery of coal and the top quality sandstone building material. The abundant herring and salmon stocks only helped to bring more changes and developement to this part of B.C. In 1931 the Canadian Pacific Railway's opened a resort on the island and CPR ships brought passengers from Victoria and Vancouver to enjoy the amenities. Today, Newcastle Island is easily accessible and one of B.C.'s most popular provincial marine park.
