| James H. Gray was born in Winnipeg in 1906, he worked for the Winnipeg Free Press for many years and was editor for several other publications. He is the author for a number of books on the social history of Western Canada including Booze, The Red Lights on the Prairies, The Winter Years, and The Boy from Winnipeg. He received the Alberta order of Excellence in 1987, the Order of Canada in 1988 and in 1995 the Peirre Berton Award for "distinguished achievement in popularizing Canadian History." He lives in Calgary.
