During its boom years after the 1864 Wild Horse Creek gold rush, Fort Steele was considered the centre of the East Kootenays. Renamed in 1888 after legendary NWMP officer Sam Steele, today’s Fort Steele is one of the West’s most authentic heritage communities. In 1899 when the CPR was routed to Cranbrook instead, the town faded but didn’t die.
Local resident Naomi Miller gives us fascinating glimpses into the everyday lives of the people who once lived and thrived here, including the Ktunata (Kootenays' Aboriginal people), the Chinese settlers, pioneers, ranchers, miners, ferryboat captains, businessmen, schoolteachers, and even housewives. Includes many black-and-white photographs.
