Daniel Francis
Copying People are historical photographs of First Nations people in British
Columbia, this collection was chosen from the many number of photos held in
museums and archives across North America, the photographs all date before
1940. "Copying People" is a translation taken from the Haida of the Queen
Charlotte Islands for camera, k'laaga nijangwe and the Haida word for mask is
nijangwu which means copying. They considered photographs to be like their
own masks. With 140 archival images, Copying People offers an excellent
glimpse of B.C.'s original inhabitants.
